Twenty-five dead after fire on cargo ship in eastern China

Vinte e cinco pessoas foram mortas em um incêndio em um navio de carga com bandeira estrangeira atracado em um porto no leste da China, segundo a emissora estatal chinesa CCTV.

Of the 42 people on board, 17 were were evacuated of which five are in hospital in stable condition, CCTV reports.

O navio estava em manutenção em um estaleiro na cidade de Qingdao quando o incêndio irrompeu por volta das 11:15 hora local (03:15 GMT). Foi extinto pouco mais de três horas depois, segundo a CCTV.

Photos released by state media showed the vessel to be the Ocean Melody, a 190m (623ft) long Liberia-flagged carrier which arrived in Qingdao on 31 August, according to tracking site MarineTraffic.

It is unclear what caused the fire. An eyewitness told the AFP news agency there was thick smoke rising from the ship, but he heard no explosion.

O líder do país, Xi Jinping, já pediu esforços de busca e salvamento de “all-out”, enquanto o Primeiro‑Ministro Li Qiang enfatizou a necessidade de “prevent secondary disasters”.

The fire comes nearly a month after a shipyard explosion in the south-eastern Chinese province of Fujian killed a rescue worker and injured 12 others.
