The Sacramento band played the first of a string of European dates at METAStadt in Vienna last night (August 16), with support from Show Me The Body.
The 21-song set saw them play music from across their career, including four tracks from last year’s ‘Private Music‘ in the form of ‘My Mind Is A Mountain’, ‘Locked Club’, ‘Infinite Source’ and ‘Milk Of The Madonna’, while it also saw them play ‘Risk’ for the first time since 2011.
The song was released on 2010’s ‘Diamond Eyes’ and was written in the aftermath of the 2008 car accident that left Deftones bassist Chi Cheng in a coma. Frontman Chino Moreno has described it as “one of the most touching and moving songs” that they have ever written.
Cheng passed away in April 2013, aged 42.

Deftones will now head to Berlin before festival sets at Cabaret Vert and Pukkelpop, while they headline the Outbreak edition of All Points East at London’s Victoria Park this Sunday (August 23).
That bill also includes IDLES, Amyl And The Sniffers, Interpol, AFI and more.
After that, they will be playing outdoors shows with IDLES in Dublin and Edinburgh later this month. Find any remaining tickets for the shows here.
They are also returning to San Diego’s Petco Park on November 7 for the seventh edition of their Dia De Los Deftones festival.
Speaking to NME last year about the band’s enduring appeal, Moreno said: “After all this time, we’re really able to reflect and be grateful that, at this age and this stage of our lives, we’re able to be creative and have people care.”.
