From the 1980s through the 2000s, U2 has rocked to enduring hits on the Billboard Hot 100.
A look at the legendary rock band's history on the chart.
The Irish quartet first entered the chart dated April 2, 1983, with “New Year’s Day,” which reached No. 53. The following year, U2 earned its first top 40 Hot 100 hit, the No.
33-peaking Martin Luther King Jr. tribute “Pride (In the Name of Love).” In 1987, U2 reached the summit with “With or Without You,” which spent three weeks at No.
1 (beginning that May 16). In August that year, the band landed its second Hot leader, “I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For,” which reigned for two weeks.
U2 boasts 34 total Hot 100 entries, including six top 10s. The band is also one of the select acts to score top 40 hits on the chart in the ’80s, ’90s, ’00s and ’10s, most recently thanks to U2’s featured turn on Kendrick Lamar’s “XXX.,” which reached No.
Frontman Bono, meanwhile, has charted three Hot 100 titles solo, with “Stranded (Haiti Mon Amour),” with Jay-Z, Rihanna and U2 bandmate The Edge, having hit No.
16 in 2010. The foursome’s other half did even better: In their lone visit to the chart under their own names, Adam Clayton and Larry Mullen’s “Theme From Mission: Impossible” rose to No.
Beyond the Hot 100, U2 has achieved a record 14 No. 1s on Billboard‘s Adult Alternative Airplay chart, as well as eight No. 1s on Alternative Airplay and seven on Mainstream Rock Airplay.
The band has charted 24 titles on the Billboard 200 albums chart, including eight No. 1s, between 1987 and 2017, among 13 top 10s.
U2 has won 22 Grammy Awards — the most among groups — including two each for album (1987, 2005), song (2000, 2005) and record of the year (2000, 2001).
U2’s Biggest Billboard Hot 100 hits chart is based on actual performance on the weekly Billboard Hot 100, through the Sept. 12, 2026, ranking. Songs are ranked based on an inverse point system, with weeks at No.
1 earning the greatest value and weeks at No. 100 earning the least. Due to changes in chart methodology over the years, eras are weighted to account for different chart turnover rates over various periods.
