A multimedia exhibition celebrating 60 years of Notting Hill Carnival has opened at Somerset House.

The free Legacy of Notting Hill Carnival exhibition opened yesterday (18th August) and runs until Friday 21st August, across the Lancaster Rooms and River Rooms in Somerset House’s New Wing.

The exhibition traces the history of Notting Hill Carnival, from its beginnings as a small street party in 1966 to its evolution into the cultural landmark it is today.

It brings together film and video, photography, sound, archival material, sculpture, costumes and more.

Photography featured in the exhibition comes from Trinidad-born British filmmaker, photographer, painter and writer Horace Ové; award-winning photographer Melissa Gardner; and writer, DJ and Don’t Touch My Fro founder Ollie Tikare.

The exhibition also explores the wider social and political context surrounding Carnival, including the issues it has historically responded to and challenged. It features a Grenfell Tower sound archive provided by Suzanna Vaz, footage from the BBC and BFI archives, and letters exchanged between Carnival organisers, local authorities and police.

In 2023, Scottish photographer Peter Anderson published a book collecting together scenes from the 1983 edition of Carnival.
