The Boston-formed, Los Angeles-based band – made up of Tom Lynch, Chris Magnani and Nolan Melia – released the single last Wednesday (August 12) through Brain Synthesizer.
They first signalled their intention to reciprocate Wednesday’s track around the time of the release of the ‘Bleeds’ album last September, on which ‘Townies’ appears.
The track is an angsty, pent-up emo track with chunky guitar riffs and a melodic through line that builds to a fuzzy, frenetic payoff.

Wednesday’s ‘Townies’, which appeared on NME‘s list of the best songs of 2025, was written by frontwoman Karly Hartzman about a friend who was subjected to sexual rumours and humiliation when they were teenagers.
Speaking to NME about the track last year, Hartzman said: “She wasn’t holding on to the anger at those people, but you know how sometimes you’re more defensive of your friend than yourself?”.
Last month, Hartzman also joined Hayley Williams at the Newport Folk Festival to perform ‘Mirtazapine’. She has also contributed to Weezer’s recent single ‘Skinny Dipper’, which will be on their upcoming record ‘The Gold Album’.
