Large numbers of people flocked to the arena as he was due to start, with festivalgoers hitting a logjam as people also tried to leave the area at the same time.
One attendee told The Journal that the resulting crowd collapse felt “like a silent bomb blast, the most terrifying thing ever”.
Another festivalgoer, Aoife McKenna, described the scene as “total mayhem”, saying people suddenly fell on top of one another while more attendees continued to arrive from outside the area.
Van Helden’s performance was cancelled before he reached the stage, with nearby bars closed and announcements made through speakers and screens asking people to disperse.

Asked at a press conference today whether Electric Picnic needed to improve its crowd control, Benn, the managing director of Festival Republic, who also operate Reading & Leeds, Latitude, The Great Escape and others, initially rejected the suggestion.
After McKenna’s account of the Friday incident was read to him, Benn said organisers had acted as soon as the collapse became apparent.
He confirmed that medics and security staff were present and that Van Helden had been prevented from beginning his performance. Benn also said there had been no crowd collapse at any other stage during the weekend.
When asked whether major dance acts needed to be placed in larger venues, Benn insisted that Electric Picnic was “in a really good place in terms of how we handle crowds”.
Van Helden later addressed the cancellation in a statement on Facebook. “Gutted about the Electric Picnic Ireland set cancellation last night, but the health and wellbeing of all in attendance always comes first,” he wrote.
Footage shared online showed the large crowd dispersing after the cancellation was announced.

A second capacity issue arose on Saturday during Duke Dumont’s performance inside the Electric Arena. Stewards and gardaí attempted to limit the number of people approaching the tent, while organisers sent several alerts through the festival’s official app.
The crowd outside the venue was reportedly several rows deep during the set. Unlike Van Helden’s performance, Dumont’s show went ahead while staff worked to control and disperse those unable to enter.
A reporter from The Journal who was present said the area was crowded but did not feel unsafe. Benn similarly said the audience had been respectful and there was “no real drama”.
The crowd problems came after sustained heavy rain caused disruption across the Stradbally site.
The Coca-Cola tent was evacuated on Friday when a large volume of rainwater leaked through the structure. Security staff cleared attendees from the area while the problem was addressed.
Rain also left campsites and routes around the festival waterlogged, with wood chips later spread across parts of the site to make the ground more accessible.
Electric Picnic’s capacity has increased by approximately 15 per cent since 2023, rising from around 70,000 to 80,000. Benn said before this year’s event that he did not currently intend to seek another increase.
Last year at the festival, Fatboy Slim’s planned secret set on the smaller Salty Dog stage was cancelled after news of the performance drew a huge crowd. Benn said at the time that it would have been “impossible” for the show to proceed safely.
