Green Day‘s Tré Cool opened up to NME about whether the punk icons will ever take on a headline slot at Glastonbury. Find out what he had to say below.

The interview came ahead of the release of Nimrods, the new fictional coming-of-age comedy inspired by Green Day’s early touring years.
Written and directed by Lee Kirk, the film follows three teenagers who mistakenly believe their band have secured a Green Day support slot at a New Year’s Eve concert.
The band appear as themselves and also serve as producers. It arrived in UK cinemas on August 11.
The soundtrack includes classics from across their discography as well as the new song ‘I’m Never Gonna R. I. P.’. To celebrate the new project, the band played a surprise set at the Los Angeles premiere afterparty last week.
Now, their drummer has spoken to NME about the huge festival slots they have played over the years, including headlining Coachella, Riot Fest, Lollapalooza, Reading & Leeds, Download, Pinkpop, Rock am Ring and more.
One event they have yet to perform at though, is the legendary Glastonbury Festival. In the latest NME interview, Tré Cool was asked if the three of them would be open to a headline slot on the Pyramid Stage.
When asked if they had ever come close to taking on the coveted slot, he replied: “I just go with what’s on the day sheet! They’re not really calling the drummer!”.
Frontman Billie Joe Armstrong attended Glastonbury in 2019 to watch his son’s band SWMRS, who were on the line-up that year.
Elsewhere in the new NME interview, Cool spoke about whether the long-discussed ‘American Idiot’ movie is still in the works, and whether the band are due for a full biopic.
Asked if they had been proposed the idea of a full biopic, the drummer responded: “Yeah. It happens every so often. Every couple of eras, someone’s like: ‘We should make a film about your life.’ Like, we ain’t done yet.
We don’t want to sit and look back and spin our wheels, spending our energy talking about what we’ve done when we’re still doing stuff.”.
There has been talk of an ‘American Idiot’ movie for a long time. Reports in 2011 suggested that Tom Hanks was interested in producing it, while playwright Rolin Jones said in 2013 that he was “finishing up” the script.
In 2016, Armstrong told NME that the project had been given the green light by HBO, and said he was expected to reprise his role as St. Jimmy from the Tony-winning Broadway and West End musical spinoff.
He later teased the film would be “surreal” and “offensive”. However, in 2020, Armstrong said that plans for the film had been “pretty much scrapped”.
As for Glastonbury, the festival had a fallow year in 2026 to allow the ground at Worthy Farm to rest, but it is returning next summer between Wednesday June 23 and Sunday June 27.
Organisers have not announced any names for next year as of yet, but Madonna has been strongly rumoured to be a possible headliner, after the release of her new album ‘Confessions II‘.
Emily Eavis, who runs the festival, recently seemed to dismiss rumours of Madonna headlining though, sharing: “Pretty much 95 per cent of the stories [about Glastonbury] you read are not true, and rumours are pretty much always wrong.
Early bookies’ favourites for the Pyramid Stage next summer have included the likes of Sam Fender, Ed Sheeran, Taylor Swift, Rihanna and Little Simz. Other rumoured names for topping the bill include Harry Styles, Radiohead, Fontaines D.
More recent speculation has centred on The Stones, with Mick Jagger and Keith Richards both suggesting that the band could return to touring in 2027. They headlined Glastonbury for the only time in 2013.
