It follows another pop crossover for Love, whose 1994 Hole track ‘Violet’ was recently covered by Slayyyter on triple J’s Like A Version series, prompting praise from Love, who said it was “delightful”.

When NME spoke to Love alongside Michael Stipe back in 1999, she touched on pop music and breaking the mainstream, saying there was a massive difference between doing it in music as opposed to movies.

As for Rae, her debut album scored a four-star-review from NME in an entry that read: “On this record, we learn that Rae’s greatest strength is her sensuality. Her silken voice is what sells the steaminess of smash hit ‘Diet Pepsi’, and her soothing coo adds to the aching intimacy of trip-hop-inspired ‘Headphones On’.

It also landed at Number Two in NME‘s 50 Best Albums of the Year list, where the album was described as “one of the best pop debuts in recent memory: starry-eyed, enigmatic observations on love, fame and money for an era in need of its hedonistic ethos.”.

Likewise, her single ‘Headphones On’ also came in at Number Eight in our 50 Best Songs of 2025 list, with an entry reading: “With notes of dreamy ’90s R&B and Madonna’s ‘Ray Of Light’ era, pop’s brightest new star gives us plenty of reason to tune in.”.

As for Love, the alt icon recently gave an update on her new solo album — her second-ever solo album and long-awaited follow-up to 2004’s ‘America’s Sweetheart’ – and shared how she “almost died”.

Back in November, she first revealed that she had enlisted Echo & The Bunnymen guitarist Will Sergeant for the new album, but not the “rude” PJ Harvey. She also later shared more details of his contributions, saying he “does these incredible leads.

I don’t think he’s ever played outside the Bunnymen, other than his solo stuff. Maybe I’m wrong.”.

In March, Love said that the album will also feature her ex-Hole bandmate Melissa Auf Der Maur, who also spoke to NME earlier this year about the possibility of a Hole reunion, hinting that the current state of politics might have made it more likely.

As for her upcoming memoir, Love has reportedly assured fans that it will arrive before Christmas this year, and will be distributed through HarperCollins. It’s a promising update, as Love last said in 2022 that the memoir The Girl With The Most Cake was complete, but at the time of writing has yet to be published.
