The band recently played ‘Marianne’ during the final ever BBC live session at Maida Vale, and bassist Conor Deegan explained that the track had initially been discarded from the album, until their late manager Trevor Dietz told them they were “absolute lunatics” for leaving it out.
The song has now been dedicated to Dietz, who Fontaines have described as their “sixth member”.
NME has given ‘Marianne’ a five-star review, noting: “That predecessor was just a stepping stone for ‘Dopamine Chamber’, which follows the rabbit deeper down the hole in search of more mechanical extremes and orchestral noir flourishes to explore the true, numbing oblivion of the modern world.
Discussing the concept behind the new record, frontman Grian Chatten has said: “The album itself is a dopamine chamber. You step inside and we test these different mind or mood-altering pieces of music on you.”.
Speaking to NME earlier this year, guitarist Carlos O’Connell said he liked the idea of making their Reading & Leeds setlist “maybe a bit more ‘Dogrel’-heavy”, but added that “anything could happen now – literally anything.”.
