Tributes have been paid across the world of electronic and dance music following the death of country music icon Dolly Parton.
The Queen of Country's death was confirmed in a video statement shared by her nephew and head of security, Bryan Seaver, yesterday (25th August). A subsequent statement by Parton's team shared with CBS confirmed that she had passed following “a brief battle with cancer”.
Born in Pittman Center, Tennessee in 1946, Parton would go on to become one of the most celebrated songwriters and performers of country music of all time, winning 11 Grammy Awards, three Emmys, and six Golden Globes over the course of her long and storied career.
Among the most notable hits among her 49 album and 3,000 song-strong repertoire are 'Jolene', 'I Will Always Love You', '9 To 5' and 'Coat Of Many Colours.
She was also a vocal ally of the LBTQAI+ community, advocating for same-sex marriage and opposing laws introduced to curb the rights of transgender people. She regularly spoke of her love of drag culture.
Speaking to Dazed alongside RuPaul, Parton once said: “I think dressing up has saved my life. I always said if I hadn’t been a woman I would have been a drag queen.”.
Parton's music crossed paths with club culture many times over the years, be that through her own work or through the countless remixes of her tracks that graced dancefloors around the world.
She famously bridged the gap between country and disco with ‘Baby I’m Burnin’’ in 1979, which hit No. 15 in the Billboard Dance Club Songs chart in 1979. In 2019, she topped the Billboard Hot Dance/Electronic Songs chart thanks to her collaboration with Swedish EDM duo Galantis, ‘Faith’.

Not surprisingly, tributes to the star have been flooding in from across the pop culture spectrum, including the dance music community, for whom the ‘Queen of Country’ was a cherished figure.
Writing on X, Welsh electronic artist Kelly Lee Owens described Parton as a “class act", adding that she "paved the way for female songwriters everywhere. Thank you.”.
Also on X, Suzi Analogue wrote: “I would like to cancel the rest of today on behalf of Dolly.
Under a photo of a letter he received from Dolly Parton after they performed together, Eurythmics’ Dave Stewart wrote: “This is the kind of woman Dolly was , making sure she wrote everyone a letter after her performance.
@dollyparton was the most humble, kind-hearted and extraordinarily talented human being. I would have voted for Dolly for President, Mayor, Queen anything, really.
The world simply felt like a better place with her in it.”.
In her post, disco icon Chaka Khan described her as a “once-in-a-lifetime artist, songwriter, storyteller & generous spirit, Dolly gave the world music filled with heart, humor & grace.
Her music will keep playing. Her light will keep shining.”.
Nile Rodgers added: “Rest In Peace Dolly Parton. You are one of the #kindest #mostalented #loving #warmhearted and genuine persons I’ve ever had the pleasure to know.”.
Optimo described Parton as the "Undisputed Queen of Country.
