Apple Music has confirmed that it will introduce labels for AI-generated music later this year.
The streaming platform announced its ‘Made With AI’ labelling initiative in an email sent to music industry partners on Thursday (20th August), obtained by Billboard.
Beginning “later this year”, songs identified by content providers such as record labels and distributors as being “materially generated using AI” will be visibly labelled on Apple Music.
The move builds on the platform’s AI Transparency Tags, introduced in March to allow content providers to disclose when AI has been used to create a “material” portion of a track, composition, artwork or music video.
The new ‘Made With AI’ labels will make those disclosures visible to Apple Music listeners.
In an April interview with Billboard’s On the Record, Apple Music executive Oliver Schusser revealed that “more than a third” of the music submitted to the platform each month is “100% AI”.
However, he said “the usage of the AI music on Apple Music is really tiny”, accounting for “below 0. 5%”.
It comes after several other streaming platforms introduced new measures to give users greater transparency around AI-generated music. Earlier this month, Spotify announced that it would begin labelling AI-generated artist profiles.
In June, TIDAL revealed that it was excluding AI-generated music from royalty payments.
Meanwhile, Beatport recently banned fully AI-generated tracks from being sold on its site.
