Another superstar representing the Netherlands on a big-room scale, Hardwell “was this young kid from Breda trying to get my music into the hands of the right people” when he first attended.
Three decades in the making, what was a small trade fair for a once-fledgling Dutch electronic music industry has grown exponentially. The inaugural edition involved a few parties at Paradiso, Club Escape and Melkweg thrown by opportunistic heads, sidelines to the business meet.
Em 2025, a ADE recebeu mais de 600. 000 pessoas em mais de 1. 200 eventos, envolvendo cerca de 3. 500 artistas.
This October, when “electronic music gathers here” again, ADE is set to be more expansive than ever. Mainstays of the programme Awakenings will run eight events at SugarFactory, drafting the likes of DJ Gigola, Jeff Mills, Prospa and Ben Klock for duties.
Dasha Rush, Kittin and The Hacker will join Club RAUM’s marathon 55-hour IELRAUM session. KI/KI goes for five hours for two nights at the huge Ziggo Dome, while SMPTD Records marks a decade of EDM output.
We'll also be hosting a series of events, panels and talks featuring Octo Octa, DVS1, Sammy Virji, Djrum, Doudou MD, Mad Miran and more.
E isso mal arranha a superfície. Haverá festivais de grande escala acontecendo ao lado do evento, incluindo DGTL, Into The Woods, Mystic Garden e Dockyard.
Meanwhile, on the conference side, Bandcamp will share Essential Insider Knowledge, Ed Banger & Because will talk 20 years of collaboration and, BMIM will demystify the increasingly important world of film, TV and video game sync rights.
There will also be discussions on AI-powered DIY record labels and merchandise as fashion statements, while Eris Drew will join a number of academics and club owners to talk about why humans still need dancefloors also on the agenda.
Testament to its sheer scale, even ADE’s Managing Director Jan-Willem van de Ven can’t sum it all up easily. Joining the organisation as an intern circa 2010, his position today is proof the mammoth showcase can provide entry points into various music industry jobs.
But when we talk he’s more interested in emphasising social impact. Showcasing the breadth of what’s on offer, amongst many other things, he cites dances for elderly Amsterdammers, and this year’s VibeLab collaboration, where cultural representatives from cities like Lagos, Seoul, and São Paulo aim to share knowledge and solutions to issues facing nightlife globally.
He also says ADE’s “greatest accomplishment” is building a huge collaborative network bridging the DIY-minded underground and billboard-level commercial business side.
Another of van de Ven’s overarching points is that ADE flies the flag for dance music as culture both inside and well beyond clubs. This year’s Swan Lake Remixed opening concert with the Dutch National Ballet at Gashoulder is an obvious example.
Involved since those days, Gary Smith is a former journalist who has taken a lead on ADE Pro — the business and ideas part of the conference programme — for longer than many attendees have been into dance music.
When we ask about impacts, he says success could be judged simply on altering perceptions of an often maligned scene, and giving those within it a focal point.
Amsterdam’s current Nachtburgemeester, or Night Mayor, Freek Wallagh believes ADE is effective at spotlighting existential questions about the city, and cities in general.
And if we had a little bit of the ADE spirit in our cities all the time, I think a lot of us would be a lot happier.”.
Like van de Ven, Brenda Narvaez also joined ADE as an intern. She’s now been programming the conference’s “talent launchpad” ADE Lab — which focuses on masterclasses and workshops — since 2021.
Prior to that, the hands-on creative incubator was separated into tranches by discipline. We’re told the new multidisciplinary approach has made it more relevant to today’s artists, and much more suited to a collaborative era.
Rachella Groen, aka Zohar, is at the vanguard of forward-thinking electronic music. Her Crawler project, a joint endeavour with noise-loving sound designer Harry Castle, will help open ADE 2026 with a wildly experimental live hardware performance at Muziekgebouw, one of the most prestigious contemporary music halls in the Netherlands.
The show was already in development, but she tells us that ADE’s involvement through its Arts & Culture programme helped scale things — just one example of a now-two-pronged strategy to support more diverse scheduling, which also includes the new Festival Fund, which offers grants to help independent promoters branch out in terms of bookings.
Although incredibly global, ADE’s roots centre on support for the Dutch scene. The fact homegrown talent, crews and projects remain front and centre can be seen as testament to its ongoing commitment to that cause.
This year, Utrecht tech-garage stalwarts SlapFunk are a case in point, running no less than 10 ADE parties in six days, part of wider celebrations for the crew’s 15th year of legal events (not counting the illicit raves that came first).
But I think it’s a really great opportunity to broaden your perspective and also to get to know the electronic scene on a much deeper level than we see online. Get involved or just learn things and get inspired, as the whole scene is over here.”.
Newer to the scene, Legri, Onitsown, and Sam van der Toure have been running Locked-In since 2019. Last year’s ADE party was a Bizarre Trax collaboration with Dr Banana on the top floor of a hotel.
Four years ago, it was a raw all-nighter at the sprawling, sorely missed Club Atelier. This October, it’s a takeover of the De Sering community centre featuring Italo-new beat-trance type DC Salas.
Also based in town, Philou Louzolo — known for bridging house, techno and Afro-electronic sounds — agrees. “The diversity of music and genres means you constantly meet people outside of your usual circle, and some of those encounters have opened doors for me over the years,” he says, telling us about bookings for Dekmantel and Panorama Bar that followed his early ADE appearances.
It’s a point that even stadium-sized names can agree with. “When nobody knows your name yet, access is everything,” explains Belgian EDM don Dimitri Vegas. “ADE compresses the whole industry into a few square kilometres.
For an established artist that’s convenient. For a young artist it can be life changing.”.
Understandably then, the annual epic has long been a magnet for people involved in every aspect of the industry from every country electronic music has permeated.
we can flip that, using that exposure and those names and turning them into money for charity.”.
The ADE team are also acutely aware of how much opportunity there is to draw attention to subjects and issues that are often woefully overlooked. Voices Behind the Bass, a multimedia and music-based lecture on how Black women have shaped music in the United States, moving through disco, house, hip-hop, and dancehall, is one example this year.
Another Detroit icon, DJ Minx has only been to ADE twice, once for a panel on women in music. Despite being a legendary figure in the Motor City, the global attention she deserves only came decades after she started.
She explains that having a prominent platform to educate people on dance music stories that have been overlooked, ignored or written out is “extremely significant”.
Minx is currently working on a new label, House Your Life, and calling on Infamous PR for services. Max Frieser is CEO at the US- and UK-based agency, and regularly talks with his artists about the benefits of visiting ADE — many of whom are based outside Europe, and don’t enjoy fast and cheap rail or air fares to Amsterdam.
He’s also one of countless agents, publicists, and managers that descend on Amsterdam each October, more than likely making ADE week the industry’s busiest moment for meetings, networking and deal-making.
Seen as a gold standard for music conferences, ADE also has a strong track record for helping smaller and more fledgling meets grow and flourish. Like Rio de Janeiro-based electronic music gathering Hot Beats, which takes place each spring.
The effort proved significant back in Brazil, too. Planned and unplanned encounters included Raphael Pujol, vice president at Beatport, noted Argentinian musicians Kevin di Serna and Mai Lawson, and the core ADE team.
It’s hard to think of a broader platform for nightlife, or a stronger vehicle through which so many cohorts from Amsterdam and beyond can be represented and made visible.
Which was always the point. Back in 1996, ADE’s approach mirrored the evolutionary story of dance culture itself: collaborative rather than top-down, open to new ideas, and actively encouraging input from all walks of life, subcultures and scenes.
A multifaceted behemoth, it has catalysed a city to such an extent it can’t possibly oversee all the aspects that make the week so special: a time when deep conversations about the history and future of electronic music sit alongside hands-on learning experiences from the best DJs and producers around; when prestige performances in the historic Concertgebouw or ARTIS Planetarium, arena DJ shows, high-profile club nights, open-air festivals, record store pop-ups, urban protest raves and word-of-mouth parties have been given the keys to a city with its arms wide open.
